Core Tip Calculation Formula

The base calculation is straightforward:

Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100)

Total With Tip = Bill Amount + Tip Amount

From there, the calculator derives:

• Per-person tip = Tip Amount ÷ Number of People
• Per-person total = Total With Tip ÷ Number of People

All results update live as you type, so you never need to press a separate “calculate” button or redo the math manually.

Rounding Options & Effective Tip %

Real-world bills rarely line up perfectly with your ideal percentage, so the calculator includes smart rounding controls:

• None: Uses the exact mathematical tip and total.
• Round tip: Rounds the tip to the nearest whole currency unit, then updates the total accordingly.
• Round total: Rounds the combined bill + tip to the nearest whole unit and recomputes the implied tip as the difference between the rounded total and the original bill.

Because rounding can nudge your real tip rate up or down, the calculator also shows an Effective tip %, computed from the final tip and the original bill. This lets you see whether you’re still around 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, or whatever target rate you prefer.
